Understanding SkyMed’s Services

Serving the Virgin Island Community

To follow is a description of SkyMed’s core services and options. For further clarification, please contact a SkyMed Representative in either our St. Thomas or St. Croix offices.

Hospital-to-Hospital Emergency Air Transportation

If our Member experiences an illness or injury that cannot be treated locally, SkyMed will provide medical transportation to move our Member to the closest appropriate hospital offering the required care, once the Member’s treating physician agrees the member is stable enough for transport.

SkyMed’s Member Services Director, in consultation with the Member’s treating physician, will certify the need for emergency air transport and all arrangements will be made by SkyMed. Ground ambulance services between hospitals and airports are included.

SkyMed’s area of service includes all fifty states of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, Bermuda, Belize, Costa Rica and the Caribbean.

IMPORTANT: IF OUR MEMBER SUFFERS A SERIOUS BURN INURY OR IF THERE IS NOT A HOSPITAL BED AVAILABLE IN PUERTO RICO AT THE TIME THE MEMBER NEEDS TO BE TRANSPORTED, SKYMED WILL TRANSPORT THE MEMBER TO MIAMI, FLORIDA, AT NO EXTRA CHARGE TO THE MEMBER.

Transportation for Recuperation at Home

After the member is released from the hospital, SkyMed will provide a commercial flight for the member to return home for recuperation.

Commercial Carrier Medical Escort Flights

If the attending physician orders a medical escort (critical care nurse) to return home with the member, SkyMed will arrange and pay for the medical escort.

Escort Transportation

If the member needs a non-medical escort to assist the member returning home, SkyMed will arrange and pay for the escort on a commercial flight.

Minor Children and Grandchildren Return

Stranded children or grandchildren are covered when traveling away with a parent or grandparent from USVI, up to the age of 18 (or 24 if they are attending an accredited college). If minor children are left stranded, an escort will be provided if needed. Additionally, they have full membership benefits.

Vehicle return

A professional, bonded and experienced driver will return stranded vehicles. The drivers do not smoke or sleep in the vehicle. If the member chooses, SkyMed will pay for the member to designate a driver and SkyMed will pay for airfare, fuel and $100/day for expenses. All vehicles must be roadworthy.

Visitor Transportation

SkyMed will pay for a round-trip commercial fare (within the area of SkyMed coverage) for a family member or friend to attend the member during the medical emergency.

Return Transportation After Recovery

After the member is released from the hospital, SkyMed will pay for a commercial flight for the member to return home after recovery. Members have 30 days from the date they are released from the hospital to decide if they need SkyMed’s help in returning home.

Incidental Expense Allowance

SkyMed will pay up to $300.00 in incidental expenses associated with each medical air evacuation flight. Expenses may include hotels, car rentals, etc…

Organ Retrieval

SkyMed will retrieve an organ when available to the recipient member. The member cannot be on a donor list prior to joining SkyMed and there is a nine-month waiting period to qualify. This waiting period begins the date the member enrolls with SkyMed.

Organ Recipient Transportation

SkyMed will transport the member to the city where the organ is located. The waiting periods are the same as Organ Retrieval.

Physical Remains Return

SkyMed will pay for the cost of airfare on a commercial carrier to return a deceased member home. SkyMed will pay for the member’s companion to be flown home and return any stranded vehicles.

Helicopter Coverage Included

All helicopter flights are covered to rescue the member in need. From the scene of a vehicle accident to a hospital, between two hospitals, between helipads, etc… The medical personnel on the scene determine the members transportation.
